“Blackboard Bonuses” program to show appreciation for local teachers

A new program in Chattanooga is designed to show area teachers their hard work training the next generation is appreciated.

Dozens of area businesses want teachers to know they will be able to get a discount this spring break.

The program, launched by Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke’s office, is called “Blackboard Bonuses.”

Berke’s office says local shops and restaurants are being asked to offer discounts and other incentives to any teacher who shows their Hamilton County Department of Education identification card during the district’s spring break week, April 2-6.

“Educators are among the hardest working and most dedicated members of our community, and the work they do every day is demanding and important in so many ways,” says Mayor Berke. “We want them to know how much they are valued and also invite them to enjoy their city in some new ways. The ‘Blackboard Bonuses’ program is hopefully the beginning a new tradition and a fun way the whole city can celebrate a successful school year.”

So far, almost three dozen local businesses have signed up to be “Blackboard Bonuses Business Partners.”

Local businesses that are interested in joining the program should sign up here by March 28.

Teachers who utilize the discounts are encouraged to post about their experiences to social media with the hashtag #TurnUpForTeachers.
