Visit San Antonio will love this Esquire list.
Earlier this month, the magazine included the Alamo City among five “unexpectedly awesome” U.S. cities that will “fuel your wanderlust” after a year of quarantine.
San Antonio and the four other destinations — Milwaukee; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Tucson, Arizona; and Bend, Oregon — were chosen because of their “abundance of cultural appeal” and for not being as crowded as places like New York and Los Angeles.

Esquire says if you spend a few days in San Antonio, you will understand why it’s one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. and proceeds to point out many of the things we love about our city, starting with the Pearl district.
The popular multi-purpose space and hangout is a must-see, according to the article, which makes sure to highlight the area’s crown jewel — Hotel Emma. With all that money you saved from not traveling in 2020, you may be able to “lock in” a reservation at one of the best hotels in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report.
Among the not-to-miss restaurants is Best Quality Daughter with its menu of infused cuisine. Esquire also directs travelers to try pork tacos from Carnitas Lonja, the brisket at 2M Smokehouse or puffy tacos at Ray’s Drive Inn.
The article then dives into the city’s museum scene, highlighting the San Antonio Museum of Art’s “Movie Metal” exhibition that showcases notable Hollywood vehicles such as the 1966 Batmobile. Another museum to receive attention is the Briscoe Western Art Museum for its collection of artifacts that trace the history of the American West.
Esquire steers clear of any mention of the city’s top tourist attractions, which seems to speak to the magazine’s premise for placing San Antonio on its list — this growing city has more to offer than the Alamo and the River Walk.
